Interesting deeeebate.
See if the powers that be valued creativity then we wouldn’t be in such a mess. Thems that know say when culture gets marginalised, and takes a battering then Society is on a hiding to nothing.
‘Scroungers’ are few. Responsible people are many. In fact the majority of us have paid our dues. I’ve paid my stamps, as has my husband, and our families before us.
I don’t begrudge the money I pay in my taxes going to schools and roads, hospitals and lamposts, although I do draw the line at giving my hard earned pennies to build Trident Missiles, but then thats another bag of worms. If our creative kids can’t find work then it stands to reason that our BIG SOCIETY, in which we are all rubbing along together, should help out.
Only that’s not how it is, is it?
The visionaries, commentators, observers and artists are always on the outside looking in. Although now if you have got money behind you you may take a couple of years as an intern then head off into the land of Meedja to make the news, having not had one iota of real life experience. The ones with talent and edge are forced to take the low paid jobs, brown nose the likes of Mr. S Cowell or give up their dreams altogether.
Back in the day the drummers drummed and the singers sung, the writers wrote and the dancers danced. The village thrived on them. Needing their stories, loving their insight and humour. They were valued as was the pig-man, the goose girl and the lacemaker. Our village has got so big that all of us are fighting to find our place.
Not everybody wants to be an entrepreneur.
Not everybody wants to go into marketing.
Not everybody wants to go into advertising.
Not everybody wants to go into IT.
Not everybody wants to go into the financial sector.
We need diversity and difference. We need new voices, saying new things, not the same old yakkers churning out the same old claptrap.
Billie Holiday wrote this song in 1939.
Them that’s got shall have
Them that’s not shall lose
So the Bible said and it still is news
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that’s got his own
That’s got his own
Yes, the strong gets more
While the weak ones fade
Empty pockets don’t ever make the grade
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that’s got his own
That’s got his own
Money, you’ve got lots of friends
Crowding round the door
When you’re gone, spending ends
They don’t come no more
Rich relations give
Crust of bread and such
You can help yourself
But don’t take too much
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that’s got his own
That’s got his own
It’s comes to a petty pass when 74 year old lyrics still ring true.

I know many ” Artists ” chasing the dream AND working full time in low paid jobs to FUND themselves while they chase.
The ” Artists ” who feel that low paid jobs are beneath them but have no problem claiming benefits are the ” Artists ” many have problems with.
However, there is nothing like a lioness protecting her cub !
WELL if it’s gonna be handbags at dawn, can i be ringmaster? Thanks.
Ding Ding.. I SPY with my little eye.. something beginning with P.
Well actually i was thinking of three P’s. Or if i wanted to be persistent – i can think of 4!
I was thinking of a petty pernicious poke.
Poppy i think you had a little itch. And Jeni it was very generous of you to scratch it for her. Although i think caution is required, in case it turns into a nasty rash.
This is why i’m not on twitter, nor facebook or other so called social networks – because of the persistent PPP’s. The petty pernicious pokers. They get an itch and expect you to do the scratching! Sometimes they can be very persistent, until they get a reaction.
Occasionally when that doesn’t work – out comes the psychopaths hat. Well you know what they say; if the hat fits – wear it. And they often do!
Sometimes i just wish people would just come straight out with it and just say… This is what i’m REALLY angry about…. And that is what i REALLY want to talk about. But no, they slide in a slippery dickery PPP! And wait for the reaction – instead of a response.
That’s why i adore the animals and the innocent, because without the articulation of a spoken language. They often manage to let you know exactly how they feel and why. Us humans and grown-ups are still struggling to reach that level of honesty. Maybe it’s because we are taught the price of everything and the value of nothing. And Amanda don’t worry, there are some who will always manage to get their money’s worth no matter what. No need to jump on that flagwaving freeriding political bandwagon.
How can you have a debate. When first you’ve got to get past all that superficial shyte. Talking of superficial shyte – i’ve got to finish my ironing – right this minute.
Jeni, your daughter is blessed to have a mother who will lovingly support her in pursuit of her dreams. I just wish i had had a little of that when i needed it.
God bless the mother who blesses the child.
